BTS on radio in South Africa

In 2018, BTS was not a staple on South African radio. A few months after we started our fanbase, we partnered with Official Korea-South Africa (@KSA_) in an effort to get BTS on radio in South Africa. We had cupcakes and a copy of BTS’ new album ‘Love Yourself: Tear’ delivered to South African DJ’s working on prominent radio platforms across the country.

Our hope was that they’d listen to the album, but also that the fandom philosophy of paying kindness forward would resonate with them and maybe, just maybe, they’d play ‘Fake Love’ on radio. At the time, local HeartFM DJ, Lunga Singama had a Saturday segment called ‘The Kpop Sound System’ and we were fortunate to have him play the song a number of times in the weeks following the single’s release. Similarly, Matt Phoenix who headlined a Kpop show on UCT Radio, also played the song multiple times.

The DJ’s we, in collaboration with KSA, sent cupcakes and albums to were:

1. Anele at 947 in Johannesburg
2. Carl Wastie at KFM in Cape Town
3. Das Kapital at 5FM based in Cape Town
4. Lunga Singama at Heart FM in Cape Town
5. Matt Phoenix at UCT Radio in Cape Town
6. ThatNicole at 5FM in Johannesburg

The response was fantastic and all DJs were kind and enthusiastic! And in every case, DJ’s played BTS on radio in South Africa!

A huge thank you to all the South African ARMY who so generously contributed to the cost of the cupcakes and the albums!
